analysing 5 magazine websites

analysing 5 magazine websites

The GQ main image used low-key lighting to give the image a dull, moody effect. This may be due to the fact that the rock star (Dave Grohl) is making a negative point about Donald trump which is projected through the colour of the image. The main image is also a visual representation of typical rock stars, due to the hair, costume and props that he is holding (guitar). This will attract an older target audience who are into politics and also into rock music, rather than the younger generation.

On the Esquire magazine homepage media language is again used to create representations. The general colour scheme is black and white which keeps the website simple and enables the viewer to focus more on the content rather than the aesthetics. The website uses multiple alliterations such as "film festival" which gives the headlines a catchy memorable feel. Mise en scene is again used on the Esquire website on the "Exercise to look great in a t-shirt" link. This uses a good-looking male model who is in good shape, which will influence and inspire other men reading the magazine to get in good shape also. Esquire also uses a Sans serif font.

Additionally, the Vogue magazine also shows typical conventions of Magazine websites. The models on the main page are wearing revealing sexual clothing, which flaunts the female body, attracting male and female viewers. The phrase "Savage" on Rhianna’s photo goes well with the sexual image as it gives off the idea of female power. Additionally, the magazine sticks to the black and white colour scheme for the body of the website, which again highlights the images and the content rather than the colour scheme of the website.

The Cosmopolitan magazine uses more of a colourful scheme to attract the audience. This may suggest that they are trying to target a younger audience, and trying to give off a happier vibe to the readers. The website again has the main stories at the top of the page, with images of the stars they are talking about. The first image is from a low angle, looking up at the basketballer which projects the idea that celebrities are above us, and we idolise them. The other images additionally are of attractive models, and other known stars.

The Elle magazine again, fits in with the norms of fashion magazines. The colour scheme is mainly white with hints of green and blue on the images, which gives it an element of simplicity. The website however uses a serif font instead of sans serif, which gives it an original, classical feel which differentiates Elle from other magazine websites. The mise en scene of the magazine, focus more on the individualism of the models, as one of the females has a skin condition, however it shows her embracing it and making it look good. There is also 2 models with afros, 1 pink and 1 blue. The theme of the magazine sticks to giving advice to the reader, and tips usually to do with appearance.
