magazine synergy

Magazine synergy

differences:

GQ promote their products in many different ways, 2 of them being online, and by magzines you can buy in shops, there are many difference and similarities between the two. In the physical magazine the different types of adverts, wether it is to do with lifestyle, fashion,or news, are mixed in together so that every page is different, nevertheless on the website, their are different catagories you can choose from, so that you can be more specific about what you want to see. Additonally, the colour scheme on the GQ website is much darker then in the physical version. This may be due to the fact that the producer of the magzine wants it to stand out in shops so that more people notice it and want to purchase it however. The people who click on to the wesite may already be fans of GQ and therefore do not need to be attracted in the first place.

similarities:
the similarities between the GQ magazine and its online website are that they both have a similar amount of advertisements within them. This makes GQ have the same quality on the website and the magzine in the store so that it has no flaws. Additonally, the content of the magazine is very similar as they both talk about things such as culture, lifestyle, and fashion. Overall the magazine and the website are very different.

promotion methods:
The GQ magazine briefly promotes the website in the bottom left corner of the front cover where it states WWW.GQ.com. This will mean that when the reader is reading the front cover (wether they have bought the magazine yet or not) they will see the website and check out the content, and therefore if they are interested they may purchase it in the future. This gives the brand exposure.
This also works vice-versa, as the website lets the reader know that they can buy a certian amount of issues for a certian price. This again means that once the reader decides that they like the content that GQ are putting out, they may purchase a magazine so that they can get all of the new information.

research into genre

Research into the genre

Fashion magazines have been around for many years, one of the first magazines being vogue. This is a fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living, and runway. The target audience of Vogue 16-24 year olds earning a high wage which fits into the ABC1 demographic.Vogue started as a weekly newspaper in 1892 in the USA, however later on the newspaper began releasing them monthly. Vogue was bought to britian for the internation edition in 1916, this was then released in other countries such as Italy which is named the best fashion magazine in the world. Arthur Baldwin Turnure was the buisness man who founded vogue as a weekly newspaper in the United States, this was sponsered by Kristoffer Right. He changed it to a unisex magazine and started Vogue overseas in the 1910s, once this happened, the prices were then raised and the magazine was turned into a unisex fashion magazine.

Codes and conventions

From researching the codes and conventions of typical high-end fashion magazines I have found that most fashion magazine front covers use high-key lighting to sell their product. The brightness brings a positive, energetic feel to the magazine. They use vibrant colours on various parts of the colour scheme, or hard lighting on the subject. 90% of the time, the images used on the front cover are mid shots or long shots. This lets the reader see the body langauge of the subject which gives the magazine a narrative. They are generally looking at the camera, or posing in a sexual or friendly way to promote the look they are selling. In fashion magzines, their is always a large Masthead in a bright colour to compliment what the subject is wearing, which adds to the general theme of the magazine.
Additionally, i have also researched the conventions of the contents page of a magzine. In the majority of  magazines the contents page is set in columns, usually 3 or 4. There is also one main image with surrounding images.

analysis of another magazine

analysis of another magazine (60 pages)

This is my analysis of a modern fashion magazine, where I had to look at the content, colour, and type of text of the first 60 pages. The majority of the pages used a sans serif font which connotes the contemporary feel that the writer is trying to create. a lot of these pages also are 90% pictures which is a good way of the creator of the magazine to keep the reader interested while also promoting the clothing brand by using models. The analysis of this fashion magazine will help me create my own project due to the fact that I now know the format which they are made in and the conventions that are included, such as the large titles and large images. I also have made a moodboard of all magazines that fit into the ABC1 demographic to get an idea of what my magazine will look like.

Prelim Video Task

prelim video task

task outline-
For this task, we had to shoot and edit a shot by shot copy of a real music video (around 60-70 seconds). I had a list of different videos to pick from, and the task was done with the members of my class.
planning -
To plan for this video, firstly I watched the original High-school musical video and took note of the different camera angles that were used to make ours as similar as possible. I then focused on the length of each shot taken so that when remaking the video, the shots would mirror the original
filming-
When filming this task, each member of the class was given a different character to play each shot, who would wear similar costumes to the original. Each different person in the class had to film one shot to ensure that it was equal.
editing-
To edit the video, I used the programme Adobe premier, where I had to take each shot and trim it down to the right point, and put it in the right place. This took me roughly two hours to edit.

My contribution:
we filmed the first 1 minuite and 15 seconds of the 'what time is it' section of the movie, this is where all of the students are in the clasroom and are waiting for the clock to hit 12 so that they camn leave the classroom. We had to lipsynch the words 'summer' in time to the scene, and 2 members of the class had to lypsnch the first few words of the song also.
All together our re-make of the High-school musical video was very proffessional due to the in time lypsynching and it also had a similar amount of shots to the original. Nevertheless, to improve the final product, we could have focused more carefully on the camera angles that were used in the orignial. This was an exstremely usefull task as it enabled me to get used to editing music videos myself, and also gave me an insight of the difficulty. From this i have learnt how to use Adobe premier efficienly, additionally I have also learnt how to work quickly with a limited time period.

The research of the location that the writer has chosen is very detailed due to the facts and statistics of Wollaton Park. They make comments the type of terrain on the park and also the measurements of the space. It also mentions how the Batman film was filmed here which will also make the reader intrigued to visit the park. The writer also mentions that the park is ideal for peaceful walks, or a day out which shows it’s ideal for anybody.

The writer also mentions how the audience feedback was positive for the planning of the website, this therefore shows the quality of the design as the users believe that it is good compared to other professional websites. The writer’s magazine and ancillary was again popular with their target audience. The writer’s research is on Dorset magazines as they wanted to make their magazine similar, to do with travelling and big spaces. This was manifested in their own project due to the fact that they decided to base it around dog walking and Wollaton Park.

The target audience chosen was also very good as they made it very wide for all adults of any age, who are the ones who will have money to buy the magazine, rather than children’s magazines as children are less likely to buy magazines. The weaknesses of the research and planning is that the layout of the magazine looks bland, and could have been made to look more creative and colourful rather than black and white in column.

The final edit of the billboard advertisement overall is very good, due to the fact that it follows all of the conventions of a professional magazine advert. Additionally has a good colour scheme that manifests the theme of the magazine. The advertisement also uses direct address to get the viewer thinking. The advertisement also advertises the website which they have created which is a smart use of promotion. The magazine itself is also very strong due to the fact that the large image of the dog straight away attracts the target audience of animal lovers and dog walkers. The fact that the magazine says ‘The big reveal’ on the front gives the magazine hype, so that the reader wants to see the reveal.
